Astrid was a waitress who was discontent with her position and looked to the sky in hopes of escape, and ended up waitressing just out of reach of adventure until she met the Doctor who was excited to show her the universe. She refused to stay behind when he went off to save the world and followed him using teleportation in order to save his ass. Also, lots of stuff blew up around them. Obviously the Doctor was mostly sad when she died because he was thinking of Ace and how much he misses her. I'm not sure how anyone could miss it.

This post brought to you by annoyance at how fandom can't quite wrap it's head around the concept that insisting the Doctor only care about people based on their ability to remind him of other people is insulting and creepy. You know why he wanted Astrid to travel with him? Because he liked Astrid. Who has every right to have her own dreams, goals, and abilities independent of anyone else. Who is allowed to forge her own connection with the Doctor and have it be just that. Hers. Is it really that hard to see how "Come travel with me so you can be a symbol of some other chick I lost, because it's not like you have any value as your own person" is just gross if true?

I suppose it's possible little Astrid stood on Sto looking at the stars and thinking "I want to grow up to be a stand-in replacement to remind everyone of the person who's really important until she comes back. I can't think of anything more exciting than propping up the value of a relationship I'm no part of, and my dream boyfriend is a man who's thinking of someone else every minute he's with me. " but y'know...somehow I doubt it.

Now, if you'll excuse me I'm just gonna go back to admiring her because she was sweet and caring, and was up for adventure, and was clever and determined under pressure, and was direct and proactive about her interest in the Doctor, and believes in equality for cyborgs, and took out the bad guy with a forklift. That's not enough?
