It's like all Sims games, there are actual 'game' stuff you can do if you like achieving goals and whatnot (none of it very difficult at all). But you can also just give your sims an inheretance from dearly departed Aunt Motherlode so they are richer than sin, ignore the goals entirely and just wander around doing awful (or nice) things to and for your sims and making up stories and skilling them up however you want (or just using cheats to raise their skills).
Like, the last session I booted up I sent John and Rodney camping and had them spend all their time eating s'mores and singing campfire songs and woohooing in the tent (I've been rough on them lately and they don't get much alone time since Ronon and Teyla moved in so I wanted to send them on a romantic vacation alone, and we hadn't used the add on camping game pack yet).
