Amy keeps hairpins in all her pockets. And some pockets that aren't hers, too. Rory resigned himself to permanently having stray elastics and hairpins about his person in Jumior Three, and the Doctor keeps finding them in his jacket pockets.

Someday he'll even figure out how they get there.

It has come in handy more often than you'd think, though, especially coupled with the fact that Amy grew up in a very old house with very thick walls and a very wonky bathroom lock. If someone wasn't in the next room, she could be stuck for hours. So she learned to pick the lock with her hairgrips. Then she practised on every other lock she could find, with varying sucess.

Rory's grandad had to take bolt-cutter to the shed lock, in the end.

All those involved in their respective upbringings would be absolutely scandalised to know that on the latest tally, Amy's hairpins have been instrumental in five prison breaks, two running TARDIS repair and almost caused an interstellar diplomatic incident.

Well, anyone who knew the Doctor as a child would probably not have been surprised about the prison break. Possibly the method of escape.
