I have liked more shows than I can count. I've loved quite a few. But I can count on my fingers the ones that have become shows of my HEART OMG. What's interesting to me is that the shows on that list are not necessarily objectively better than the ones on the like/love list. What they have in common is that they showed up in my life at the exact perfect moment that whatever they were offering was exactly what I needed at the time. A weird kind of alchemy where the stars align just so and we are in perfect synch. It is as much a timing issue as anything else. Would Homicide be a SHOW OF MY HEART, if I had started watching it now? Probably not (though I still would have loved it a really LOT). But I started watching it then, at a time when everything about it meshed exactly with what I wanted and needed from the characters and the stories. Buffy is a fantastic show that would have entertained the hell out of me whenever I saw it...but it wouldn't have left the indelible mark on my life that it has had it not been that moment in time.
The more I think about it, the more I realize that I couldn't have chosen this one or that one, nor really is there a specific list of elements that can predict what will be a HEART show and what won't. Yeah, the Doctor travels in space and time and has all these character and plot elements that I would love regardless. But so do lots of shows. This one, though...it found me when there was exactly a specific madman in a box shaped hole that needed to be filled.
So, now I've got Once A Thief and it...yup, is hitting that spot. There won't be a time that it won't make me feel like this...just like I can pull out any of the other shows on the list and still get hit with that feeling the second the opening credits start because in the moment and time we met we were made for each other.
It's kind of a glorious feeling.
