Today's culinary lesson that Eunice has learned: Hummus is both ridonkulously easy to make and cheap as hell when you make it yourself. I find myself kind of shocked. A tiny little tub of the stuff is like, five bucks pre-made. I can make the same amount for under a dollar myself. And it takes, like, two minutes. Seriously.

Whoever is selling those pre-made hummus things has one hell of a scam going. I sure enough know I won't ever buy it from the store again.

Here from network.

FYI: hummus freezes just fine.
Also: if you make it from dried chickpeas rather than canned ones, it takes longer, but it's even cheaper than using canned.

Tortilla chips are a similar racket.

Just so you know, using dried chickpeas is almost no work. It does take a bit more planning (you have to start a day in advance), but it's not actually difficult.

That said, I mostly make hummus from canned chickpeas, just because for me it's usually a spur of the moment thing: I want to eat in the next ten minutes and/or I don't want to turn on the stove to do it. Ergo, hummus.

Also, YAY, you are cooking! Let me know if you want additional easy recipes, cookbook advice, or whatever. I am happy to be on call. :D

It can get nasty if you leave it around for a while. I think half the price of the store-bought stuff is for icky preservatives; the other half is for flashy packaging.
