Finished season 1 of Voyager, and might go on to season 2 today...though I might also vid if I feel up to it since I have a pile of owed vids still to get through.
My random Voyager observations of the day. Well, the first one is more Star Trek observation...I'm not sure why it never really clicked with me before that the holodeck is basically self-insert fanfic. I did a forehead slap of 'duh, you idiot...you've known this for years' but for some reason I never actually made the conscious connection that way until now. Except now I want a holodeck even more than ever.
Other is not so much an observation as a helpful hint to the crew of the Voyager. So, you've just encountered an energy signature, blobby substance unknown, funny looking nebula, etc.? How exciting for you! Please make note that this is almost certainly an unknown life form (or disguising one) that will fuck your shit up if you poke at it. Being shocked and amazed that this is the case is an understandable reaction the first few times it happens. After a certain point, though? I'm just gonna start being embarrassed for you. What is the point of all those logs you keep if you're not going to learn from them? I suggest pinning a note to the bridge which says "Assume all funny looking energy thingies are alive unless proven otherwise" instead of the other way around. Maybe add some colorful stickers to draw attention to it. Your life will go so much more smoothly.

Voyager was more explicit about that than any of the other series, IMHO. And you haven't even seen Worst Case Scenario and Alter Ego yet, where the metaphor isn't even a metaphor anymore.

well, "not learning" is kind of a recurring thing in the series. I blame the writer-producers and their fear that any kind of continuity-based storytelling would scare away viewers (the series rated well in certain demographics, but those tended to be icky and female, and they wanted males 18-35).

Ah, happy days.
Jeez, now I am seriously going to have to dig my S1 discs out.
