I think having my thyroid out was probably one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. I can't ignore that I finally having the energy and the focus to actually do this whole getting healthier thing (particularly the walking) coincides pretty neatly with my recovery from surgery. I also can't ignore that at least some of the reduction in pain also coincides, though I know a good deal of that comes from the walking, I also think there was at least some that allowed me to start in the first place. And from the research I've been doing (I did surprisingly little prior to surgery, mostly directly related to the surgery itself, to be honest I was so over medical shit happening to my body that I just kind of let a lot of it happen)...chronic pain is also a feature of thyroid dysfunction. As I mentioned before, the neuropathy hasn't gone away, but it's really starting to look like a much smaller part of my overall pain problem than I thought.

There are just...a whole lot of little things that add up to a bigger picture, in terms of energy levels, pain levels, food cravings, even some of the depressive and anxiety swings that just...for years my thyroid was eating itself alive and consequently throwing out inconsisent hormone levels and swings. And at this point, several months out of having it gone, I am almost feeling like an entirely different person in a lot of ways.

I still despair sometimes, when I compare myself to 'normal' healthy people in terms of both my physical and mental health...but when I compare it to just me, the improvement is so vast it is practically a whole new world. I do wish I had some left over for things like vidding (I heard Running Down a Dream on the radio today and had a moment remembering making that vid and I missed it so much), but you know? I think that's coming.

Good riddance wonky thyroid, you kind of sucked.
