I'm working on a way to live with the stuff that bugs me so I can get back to flaily squeeing over all the hugging and companion awesome and extreme porn potential, even if Martha/Jack/Mickey is now warring with Jack/Ianto/Gwen in my head and if they really are all on Torchwood together I may have my first ever OT5 because DONT MAKE ME CHOOSE. Yes, anyway, fixing now.

Donna. So, I think, in my head it goes like this. Even if she can't remember, Donna's going to find herself feeling vaguely unsettled and unsatisfied as she goes forward, itching to somehow do more, be more, see more. It doesn't kick in right away because if she starts really thinking about the whole recent apocalypse it might, y'know, kill her, so her brain just sort of skitters away from settling on that particular interesting thing that happened to the Earth. But she does start noticing, and thinking, and wondering. And when she sits out and watches the stars with Wilf (because she feels oddly compelled to, though she doesn't know why) it gets stronger. And because interesting alien things are going on all the time that have nothing to do with the Doctor, she maybe starts to put some of that together. Researching odd events on the computer leading to actually going out to investigate until she is very much like the Donna who found the Doctor at the beginning of the season, minus that reason for doing it. And finding that this all exists and getting annoyed that sometimes the aliens are trying to do bad things and going "Oh, hell no". I think I have this vague idea that it as this point that she starts creating and leading a little band of alien fighters made up of other temps. Who use the fact that they are all over the city in various jobs to their own purposes, specifically getting assigned to companies where funny business is going on and ending up specializing in taking down any alien corporate threats. Fear the temps, oh yes. They will take out your tentacled ass with a stapler. And sometimes she runs across Sarah Jane or Torchwood, because of the work she's doing, and doesn't quite understand why they look at her with such admiration, why they seem to have such strongly fond feelings for her when they deliberately keep a distance like that. But she doesn't think about it too hard because her brain immediately skims over it and redirects every time she does. And she lives.

Rose. Well, she gets mad. Finally. It doesn't take long for the reality to set in, for her or Human!Ten, that they sort of don't actually know each other even though they share some strong memories and feelings, and that they both pretty much got left behind. Her with the realization that she spent years chasing smoke and dreams and never stopping to take a good hard look at her life and how she wants to live it. Him without an identity or a TARDIS and a heapload of genocide angst. I 'ship it. I think in much the same way I used to occasionally 'ship Jack/Martha in season 3 as a function of 'we got so fucked, didn't we?' bonding (though I want them to have all kinds of sex now for different reasons). And that's when Rose Tyler begins to live her life, to ask herself what she wants beyond a boyfriend that looks like David Tennant. I'm not sure what that is, but I suspect it involves protecting her home and world, maybe figuring out how to get herself to the stars, and taking joy in the bonds with her mother and little brother. Still not sure about Human!Ten and how he'll get through this, but I imagine he'll end up spending a lot of time in the Torchwood labs driving everyone insane. Maybe they'll work out together, and maybe they won't. But it won't define her. Sometimes she'll think of her time with the Doctor and be sad, and sometimes she'll laugh remembering, and sometimes she'll send him a silent thanks when something she learned then helps her now, and she'll shake her head at herself and how she thought she couldn't be anything without him when that just wasn't true. Most of these musing ends with an exasperated, 'also, he was a bit of a dick.'

There. I think I can work with that.
