More Who babbling because I woke up with it on the brain. I think Mickey may be the best of all of them, and with that I'll go behind the cut for the rest of that ramble.
The thing that is so astonishing about Mickey is that everything he accomplishes, all the strides he makes, and the person he turns himself into...he does all of it without anyone ever really believing in him. Even when he gets credit for being awesome it is after the fact, and kind of with surprise, like no one expected it of him in the first place. But he does it. He's dismissed, laughed at, offered very little support, and excluded and yet Mickey Smith still finds his own way, chooses his own destiny across universes (twice!), and creates himself as a hero. That is some serious strength right there.
For all that Martha had to put up with, it was never a question that the Doctor trusted her, and believed in her awesome. Jack spent time feeling both welcomed and included with Nine and Rose before he was abandoned. Rose got put up on a pedestal. Donna was encouraged and praised and given support and friendship. Mickey got an invitation, but was pretty much always in a postion of exclusion and either ignored or mocked far more often than anything else. And in response he takes charge of his own growth and life and ends up the defender of two worlds. Because he's just that awesome.
This post brought to you by me being overly excited at the possibility of a Mickeyfull Torchwood (do we know if this is for certain yet? please someone tell me we will get this!)
