*yawns at the internet*
I am awake at 4:30 a.m., which is not as bad as it could be. Only a few hours behind when I'd usually wake up so I figure it will sort itself out over the next couple of days. I'm going to try to do a proper trip report later on today when I'm slightly less bleary. I am way, way behind on Livejournal (no seriously, if anything happened while I was gone, please tell me) so I have no idea what the reaction was to the big Doctor Who casting news that occured while I was gone, but these were mine,
So, if you happen to be watching BBC News when David Tennant announces that he will be leaving Who after the specials, this means you will know within minutes because that gets a breaking news banner. It was kind of delightful for the news to agree with me about what constitutes important breaking news. As for my reaction, it was not what I expected. I figured when this happened I'd be devastated but that I'd get over it. I seem to have skipped the devastated part entirely and moved straight into being excited and happy. For Tennant and for Who. I am a fan of both, and while it is convenient to have them in the same place, it isn't required. And at this point I find that I'm really looking forward to what each is going to do individually.
It's a wicked exciting time for Tennant, where he can pretty much write his own ticket with what roles he wants to play, and how much do I love watching him act his socks off? A lot. Hamlet was...it's not just that he was really good in it, which he was, it's also that he looks happy doing it. Seeing that sort of reinforced how much I've enjoyed pretty much everything he's done, and will almost certainly continue to. I think he said something in the interview about leaving Who that he wants to go while he still loves it, while it is not a job, and...well, yes. I can't wait to see where he goes next. Though, hopefully lots of tv and film, because if it is a lot more theater, flying across the ocean to see that is expensive. :)
As for Who, while it would have been fun to see what Moffat did with Ten, there is also a lot to be said for getting a regeneration and a clean slate to work with. One of the biggest strengths of Doctor Who is it's infinite adaptability and the way it can constantly reinvent itself, while retaining the core of itself. It is Moffat's turn now, and, OMG he gets his own Doctor to do it with. How is that not cool? We'll get to see a new era unfold, with it's ties and nods to the past, but it's own unique flavor. Ten Doctors, bits and pieces and memories and history and stories exploding into a new one, fresh and ready to jump into the universe with his own quirks and companions and new eyes to see everything with. And in the wardrobe room, sitting with all the other pieces of the past forever, a row of Chucks, a suit, and a long coat of awesome. Yeah. I'm good.
