I am wondering if I'm just being nostalgic, because I was just thinking that I was sure there was a time during the mid to late 80s to the early 90s was, like, this surge of movies that had a primary focus on the friendship and bonds between women. Like, chick flick meant that as well as romantic comedies and whatnot. And I have missed a lot of movies that have come out in the last decade and change, so it's possible that I am imagining the disparity and the narrowing of the 'chick flick' genre.

Am I high, here?

I remember Thelma and Louise, Steel Magnolias, Beaches, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Terms of Endearment just off the top of my head. I'm sure there were others.

I totally would count it too! A movie chock ding-dang full of women, and it wasn't about Which Lady Gets The Dude, plus the athleticism and the multifarious relationship dynamics and the wartime social context and the general awesomeness and y'all have reminded me I need to watch this movie again. *g*

I wish you were high. I'm having a lot of trouble coming up with recent or even recent-ish movies that fit the bill.

And I was thinking about all the ruckus made around Bridesmaids--even though it was a very positive ruckus, I think it totally proves your point by being so much about surprise, like this was the first movie evah that could have a group of women in it and still be funny/make money, like the 80s and early 90s NEVER HAPPENED. Cultural/industrial amnesia, anyone?

I'd probably add Muriel's Wedding, Heavenly Creatures, Antonia's Line, and The Joy Luck Club. And maybe The Color Purple, too? So much of that focuses on the women's relationships. And I always think of the women's friendships in Enchanted April, too.

The only fairly recent ones that come to mind are Miss Congeniality (good grief, that's 12 years old!), The Princess Diaries ('01), Bend it Like Beckham ('02), Legally Blonde ('01), and Volver ('06).

I appreciate that Bridesmaids did well and got so much attention, but after seeing the clip they were using to promote it (Melissa McCarthy's character shitting in the sink in some fancy bridal salon while another woman barfed into the toilet), I knew I didn't want to see it. I don't care if it's men doing it or women, I'm just not a big fan of scatological humor. And MMcC was hitting my embarrassment squick, which sucks, because I love her.

ETA: One of reasons I loved the show Bunheads that aired this summer was because it had an all-female cast. There were a couple recurring male characters, but that was it. And it did well, too.
