The more I study Spanish the more it becomes clear that English has ridiculously inefficient verbs. Seriously, which makes more sense...a bunch of helping words, or having all the information regarding who and how many and when self contained right there? That shit is elegant. And frustrating if you're not used to it. Which I am not. But I can damn well admire how much more sense the grammar makes in the abstract, while being utterly flummoxed by it in practice. I wonder how many native Spanish speakers trying to learn English are like, 'but that makes no sense, who came up with this and were they smoking crack?' because seeing a different way of doing it is certainly making me think that about the language I grew up speaking.

I expect that's the reaction that anyone who speaks any of the Romance languages has to learning English. :-/

Latin is similar. It's very helpful, once you're used to it.
