I think I have resolved the problem and the recutting process now continues. And I'm having thoughts as I go through clipping and whatnot. Specifically thoughts about why it's a bad idea to judge a companion's 'worth' based on what the Doctor feels or thinks about them. 'Cause, see...the Doctor tends to be highly protective of Rose. He doesn't really send her off on her own to Save Stuff, and, in fact, tries to send her away when there is apocalyptic danger. Rose's response to this is generally, 'Fuck that, I can take care of myself..oh, and you too by the way.' Rightly so. She can, and she does. With Martha, there's hardly even a question, off he sends her to Get Shit Done, trusting absolutely that she will. And she does. So what we have are two companions who Get Shit Done, but only one the Doctor trusts to Get Shit Done. If I were judging based on the Doctor, I could conclude that Rose is not capable. I'd really rather go, 'Dude, you are high! Of course she can Get Shit Done. Alien freak.' ('alien freak' is sort of my default position with the Doctor, and I say that with the greatest affection and love)
This, of course, can be applied across the board using all kinds of different stuff the Doctor thinks to 'prove' one companion is better than the other. But....why? Remove his opinion from the equation and you just have two kick ass women saving the world. Full stop. What's wrong with two kickass women saving the world? Shouldn't that be the important bit?
