OMGWTF. So, right after I made that last post I realized it was a full on marathon of Ghost Whisperer going, so I settled in with some snacks and I was totally grooving on the whole show and then......WTF they killed the best friend? No, wait, back up. They kill the best friend by DROPPING A PLANE ON HER?

Ooookay? I still think I'm going to download some seasons of this. But...THEY DROPPED A PLANE ON THE BEST FRIEND.

That reminds me of Ray Ramono on ER who first got his arm chopped off by the blades of a helicopter when they were evacuating the hospital due to the anthrax outbreak and then a season or so later he died when one landed on him in the ambulance bay.

...what a way to go.

Yes. Yes, they did. And I was SO bummed, because I LOVE Aisha Tyler, and it was a terrific to have a smart, funny, businesswoman who was also a character of color. *sigh* FWIW, there's some really good stuff in S2 &3 (one character in particular -- <3 <3), but S4 went in a new direction, and I ended up bailing partway through.

I'm not exaggerating when I say every GW ep I watched up until a certain point in S4 made me cry. It was like my weekly let-it-all-out sobfest.

I was really enjoying their friendship too. On the upside I've only seen the episodes in the marathon, so I have many more with her in them prior to the plane dropping that I have not seen yet.

It is a good cry show, emotionally manipulative, but in the way that I don't roll my eyes too much at because it is so blatant that you know what you're getting into.

It is, but... I can't put my finger on why it doesn't piss me off the way Spielberg usually does. Maybe it's the degree of emotional manipulation? Maybe it's not really long and drawn out? I don't know.

Maybe because it is utterly straight up in its manipulation with no real pretension of being anything else? Like, 'you're here to cry at the dead mother looking for her child, right? Good. Here you go.'

Whereas a lot of time that kind of manipulation presents itself as being deep and meaningful and you feel like you're supposed to walk away having Learned A Lesson. Not that Ghost Whisperer is short on moralizing from what I can tell so far, but its kind of like a fig leaf for the emotional porn we all know we're there for?

You may be right about GW not dropping the you must take away a deep and meaningful lesson anvil on viewers' heads. I resent the hell out of that shit.
