Okay, I did it. I officially have a twitter now. I think I had one before, but I have no clue what name it was under or how to get to it.
So. I am faneunice on said Twitter. I also have no freaking clue how it works really, so if you have a Twitter drop your name here in comments so I can follow you. Also, if you have any tips or can explain how any of it works (like, the whole @ thing or what the hell a # does).

--Hashtags (#) are subject header groupings or just random tags people put on tweets (it's much more chaotic than blog tag systems, though back-and-forth discussions do take place under their aegis). @+username = Addressing someone whose tweet you're replying to or retweeting.

Hashtags, such as #YayEunice are an easy way to keep track of a particular topic that's going around twitter that you might be interested in. For example, when White Collar airs, you might see the hashtag #WhiteCollar on some tweets, and if you click it, you'll see a list of all the tweets using that hashtag, to get other people's responses to the episode.
If something is happening politically, you can keep track of it in realtime with hashtags. When Obama was going to speak there were several hashtags making the rounds, from #Obama to #Libya to #binLaden to #45MinutesLateWTF (they kept bumping up the start-time for the announcement). Everyone on twitter knew about 30 minutes before Obama came on the air that bin Laden was dead, because a CBS correspondent tweeted it.
There are no "official" hashtags--someone starts one, and it spreads, and then you can follow whatever's happening. You can even start your own! :D Oftentimes, people use the hashtag concept just to be goofy, like "Oh my God I need to go to bed #AnyoneHaveAmbien -- obviously, clicking that hashtag will get you nothing, but it's pretty common for people to make hashtags up for fun.
Sometimes there are hashtag games -- for example, tonight people are playing a game where they come up with funny song titles based on stuff from Lord of the Rings. So if you want to see all the contributions to the game, you'd click on a #LOTRsongs hashtag in someone's tweet, and you'll get a list of all the song title parodies.

There are three ways to tweet.
One: simply to type into whatever client you're using for twitter, and then click send. This tweet is public, and anyone who follows you can view it. Also, anyone who finds you and clicks on your twitter account can see it. This, of course, depends on whether or not you lock down your account.
Two: An @ tweet means that the person whose twitter name follows the @ sign will absolutely see the tweet. Also, anyone who follows both you *and* the person you tweeted will see that tweet. For example, if you type (without quotes) "@tzikeh WTF is twitter?!", it will show up as an @ tweet to me, and anyone who follows both you and me will see it. People who follow you, but not me, will not see it show up in their twitter feed.
Three: a d tweet is private only to the person you are d tweeting. You simply type (without quotes) "d tzikeh email me at home?" And only I will get that tweet. You can choose in your settings how you want to receive d tweets - text message, an email account, etc.

If you want to respond, but you also want others to see it, you can type (no quotes) ".@tzikeh you're a poopiehead" -- any tweet that doesn't start with an @ is public. So I could tweet (no quotes) "OMG guess what @faneunice is on twitter!" -- and everyone who follows me will see it, but the @ will assure that it goes to you.
