Okay, so I have heard about Game of Thrones for years as something awesome, but never got around to reading it because lots of reasons. Anyway, I caught the pilot of the tv show while I was on vacation and was intrigued. And
pipsqueaky was raving and pimping and flailing about the books. And then when I got home, I have no HBO and limited downloading abilities. So I figured I'd just go ahead and read the books until I could watch the series.
As of last night I finished the first book and HOLY SHIT. A weird spoiler thing follows in that...if you have not read the book and are watching the series as it airs there are BIG HONKING SPOILERS under the cut. No, really. BIG. AND HONKING. Do not read any further if you don't want to be spoiled. However, I have not read beyond the first book yet, so if you have read the series I am begging you to not spoil me for what comes next.
Got it? Good. Now
HOLY FUCKING SHIT. I am...like...*flails*. That was like the ultimate mindfuck of a roller coaster ride and I am blown away for reals. I'm almost at sort of a loss for where to start. Because it's all twisty and intriguing and then BAM, SHIT GETS SO REAL. Did they really KILL NED? Yes, yes they did. And then DANY AND THE MOTHERFUCKING DRAGONS.
Dany...dear god, Dany. Who knew the frightened child sold as chattel would turn out to be the baddest motherfucker of them all? <3 Dany (and fuck yeah Viserys getting exactly what he deserved. Asshole.) And..and...Robb declared King of the North, HOLY SHIT. And what the fuck is up with Robert's younger brother claiming the crown anyway...that does not bode well.
I am pretty sure I could not love Arya more than I do without exploding, though on the other hand I wish to reach in and grab Sansa out of all of this and adopt her because that poor child is not even remotely prepared, she just wanted a song :(. Arya can take care of herself (and so can just about everyone else, even with all the death and rape and destruction. Well, Ned couldn't, BECAUSE HIS HEAD GOT CHOPPED OFF). Sansa is a naive lamb to slaughter, that poor kid. Jon Snow <3 <3 <3 <3, and twice that many hearts for Sam. Bran is utterly precious, and I'm glad the text seems to agree with me that hurting a hair on his head makes you EVIL AS FUCK. I've got mad, mad respect for Cat's fierce devotion to her family and pragmatic badassery.
Tyrion has won me over with his mad self preservation skillz delivered with a side of 'oh, and FUCK you' And oh god, Cersei...whom I do not like, but damn you've got to respect her game 'cause the lady gets shit done. I mean, sure, incest and diabolical plotting would not be my method of choice to take over the world but you can't argue with the results. Joffrey needs to DIE IN A FIRE on the other hand, along with the rest of the Lannisters.
Basically, I kind of either love or love to hate everyone...and it's like all these fascinating characters wrapped up in a plot that makes my head hurt if I think too hard about it. This gloriously fucked up slow motion train wreck of missed opportunities and crossed signals and bad decisions. It is like, every step of the way you get to see how disaster might be averted, how the COLLISION OF BADNESS that is coming might be stopped. Just so it can be snatched away. If only...if only...if ONLY is the motto of this story. And shit, THEY DEADED NED SO HARD...I no longer have faith anyone will make it out alive. I AM CONCERNED. ::chants 'not Arya, not Arya, PLEASE NOT ARYA' over and over::
DID I MENTION THE MOTHERFUCKING DRAGONS?!? AND WINTER IS COMING, OKAY...I AM SCARED OF WINTER. THERE ARE CREEPY CORPSES THAT WAY.
As soon as I do have access, I'm most definitely going to watch the series 'cause I'm told it's following pretty faithfully to the story and there are things I really, really want to see play out visually. Not the least of which is Viserys getting molten metal dumped on his head. AND DRAGONS.

If you ever do get the hankering to read the books, though, you won't regret it. :)
